Welwyn Garden City Golf Club is about to launch a pro-am with a difference. It will have the usual 18-hole stroke play team format but unlike the vast majority of other local pro-ams will feature only female professionals.

The pro-am sponsored by PACAIR, leading designers, distributors and installers of bespoke air conditioning products, is due to be staged on Thursday September 7th and one of the first pros to be signed up was former US Women’s Open champion and past Solheim Cup captain Alison Nicholas. Several other Ladies European Tour players and members of the Ladies European Tour Access Series have also agreed to play.

The pro-am is the brainchild of five-time Club champion and current scratch team member, Andy Collie, who wanted the club to stage a pro-am but one that was a bit different from the norm.

“It is something we have been thinking about for a while,” he confirmed.

“Amateurs get plenty of chance to play in pro-ams alongside male club professionals but not with women tour players which is a shame because in some ways at least male amateurs can relate more to the way women pros play the game,” he said.

“We set out to run a pro-am featuring 22 teams and it seems to have struck a chord because we’ve already sold more than half the places.

“It’s going to be great fun for the amateurs and potentially lucrative for the pros who are playing for a prize fund of £2,000,” he added.

“PACAIR and PACAIR North West are delighted to be main sponsor for the Pro-am at Welwyn Garden City Golf Club, said Nigel Palmer, Managing Director of PACAIR.

“We feel it is a great idea to have an all lady professional field and it fits our company model as a forward-thinking organisation always looking to push boundaries and think outside the box.

“I am sure our clients and other guests will relish this rare opportunity to play with the lady professionals and hopefully any publicity the event attracts may inspire other Women to give the game a try”.

Golfers who want to sign up or find out more about the pro-am should contact Welwyn Garden City club manager David Spring at [email protected] or pro-am organiser Andy Collie at [email protected]. The price for a team of three is £210. The club is accepting entries from male, female and mixed teams but all competitors must have an official handicap.
