One of the most iconic golf courses in the world, Trump Turnberry’s Ailsa course, has been photographed using NASA-inspired technology to create an impressive two billion pixel shot comprising of 250 individual high resolution images stitched together to make a single, unique picture. The stunning photograph allows the viewer to zoom in to see extraordinary detail of the course, including the iconic Turnberry Lighthouse, the new par 3 11th hole and Trump Turnberry’s PGA Golf Professional, Cameron Tortolano, lining up his putt.
The technology is called Giga Pixel photography which is based on the same technology employed by NASA and Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, for the Mars Rovers, Spirit and Opportunity missions’ team to capture incredible images of the red planet.
To generate the giant panoramic shot, robotic camera mounts capture hundreds of photos using a hi-resolution digital camera, which are then combined in post-production to make one giant image.
Whilst Giga Pixel Technology has the ability to create a two billion pixel shot, in comparison, an iPhone camera has 12 megapixels, whilst a state of the art Canon DSLR camera generates a 50 megapixels image.
The image was captured by London based photographer and director, Simon Stock, across three days in early October. He said: “Having shot at Turnberry 15 years ago, I remembered how spectacular it is and thought it would be the perfect location to try to capture this new form of photography.
“What really excites me about this project is the combination of a very technical type of photography using computer controlled camera systems to capture hundreds of images and combing that with the traditional photographic story telling.
“The Ailsa course is set against the dramatic backdrop of the Ayrshire coast with Ailsa Craig and Arran adding to the beauty of the scene. The combination of capturing such a stunning location and then having the ability to examine it in extreme close-up makes for a very exciting project.”
Turnberry’s Ailsa course reopened in June as part of a £200m investment by the Trump Organisation.

Not only does it showcase The Ailsa and the iconic Turnberry Lighthouse in all their glory but it shows quite simply why Turnberry is a truly mesmerising place.”
Improvements to the unrivalled stretch of coastal play have been carefully created by renowned international golf architect Martin Ebert, of Mackenzie & Ebert. All 18 holes have seen changes made with huge areas of turf moved between the various holes to complete the refurbishment.
