USGA, Diana Murphy

For just the second time in USGA history, the governing body has elected a woman to lead the organization, after Diana M. Murphy became the group's 64th president.

Murphy replaces Thomas J. O'Toole, who had been president for the past two years.

The 59-year-old has been a member of the association's powerful Executive Committee for five years but has been formally involved with the USGA since 1996. She served as association vice-president in 2014 and '15

Murphy is adament she wants to be remembered for her impact and not her gender.

“I want to be the right person for the job, not the right girl,” Murphy, 59, recently told Golf Digest. “This is not about me, this is about the USGA and doing what is best for the game of golf.”

In 1996, Judy Bell became the first woman elected president of the USGA. She played an instrumental role in cultivating and promoting youth and diversity programs in the game.

The USGA administers the Rules of Golf for the United States and Mexico, while the R&A covers the rest of the world.
