Professional golfers and celebrities from the sporting and broadcasting worlds came together on Tuesday for a team challenge golf day to raise funds to support type 1 diabetes research.
The event held at the prestigious London Golf Club in Kent, on the Jack Nicklaus-designed International course, raised £30,000 to support JDRF, the type 1 diabetes charity.
Each team included a famous face, or a professional golfer – with celebrity participants including football heroes Gianfranco Zola and Sir Trevor Brooking, boxing legend John Conteh and broadcasters Rob Bonnet and Jamie Theakston.
PGA golfers joining teams included Rob McGuirk, Harry James and Gary Evans. European Tour pro Rob Coles, who also lives with type 1 diabetes, helped organise the event.
Type 1 diabetes affects 400,000 people in the UK, 29,000 of whom are children. The condition develops when the body’s immune system attacks and destroys insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.
JDRF supports families and individuals affected by type 1 diabetes and funds leading research to cure, treat and prevent the condition.
