A new amateur golf challenge is giving the public a chance to beat their golfing heroes during the 145th Open Championship at Royal Troon, from July 14-18.

The Major Moments Golf Series is an interactive tournament where amateurs can win exclusive prizes, including weekend golf breaks, for shooting a nett score lower than the best gross score returned by the pros on each day during the year’s four Majors.

The series is hosted at Thorpeness Golf Club and Hotel, one of the leading play and stay golf resorts in Suffolk.

Brad McLean, general manager at Thorpeness Golf Club and Hotel, said:

“There are four Major Championships a year and 16 days in the Major Moments Series when amateurs have a chance to beat their heroes, win prizes and enjoy their own ‘Major Moment.’”

Every day during the Majors there will be an individual prize winner, and the golfer shooting the lowest nett round during each Major week wins a place in the 18-hole Major Moments Grand Slam tournament on October 30th, 2016 - including free accommodation, golf, a three course dinner and cooked breakfast.

Chris Horncastle of Wrotham Heath Golf Club, Kent, was the first player to secure a place in the Major Moments Grand Slam tournament when he emerged with the best score during Masters Week in April.

He was joined by 14-year-old Harry Bailes from Manor of Groves Golf Club, Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, who shot a remarkable 48 stableford points while on holiday in Thorpeness during the US Open.

How does it work?

  • · Open to any golfer paying a green fee and members of Thorpeness Golf Club
  • · Book a tee-time Thurs-Sun during any 2016 Major Championship
  • · Entry to each day of the Major Moment Series costs £2
  • · Play 18-holes Stableford with a card marked by a playing partner

The nett score of series competitors is calculated from their Stableford score and compared to the leaderboard from that day’s Major play.

A live leaderboard for the Major Moments Series will run in the Thorpeness clubhouse.

Thorpeness is an 18-hole, par 70 James Braid designed heathland course in the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
