The R&A has announced that a postal ballot among members of the Club on a motion to admit women as members will be conducted prior to the announcement of the result on 18 September 2014.

It has taken 260 odd years but the R&A are taking steps to allow women members.

It was originally announced at the end of March that their hierarchy had recommended that the membership should change their constitution accordingly and there will be a vote on 18 September, the same day as Scots will be deciding whether or not they want an independent Scotland.

However, the R&A has since announced that a postal ballot among members of the Club on a motion to admit women as members will be conducted prior to the announcement of the result on 18 September 2014 rather than the scheduled vote. By taking this decision all members can take part in this historic vote.
