St Andrews students Alex Purdom from Canada and Carnoustie's Ailsa Summers scored impressive wins in the BUCS Student Golf Tour 54-hole event at Fairmont St Andrews.

In the women's event, on the Torrance and Kittocks courses, the strong winds and wet underfoot conditions did not detract from a fascinating tussle between the leading players, Summers and Hannah McCook (Stirling) from Abernethy.

McCook had a three-shot lead - 154 to 157 - over Summers with the final round to play over the Torrance course. Summers made up the leeway, finishing with a birdie for a one-under-par 73 to McCook's 76, both totalling 210.

Summers won the tie-breaker - a better last round - giving her back-to-back wins on the Student Tour. She had won the opening event at Ladybank last month.

In the women's team event, Stirling's McCook, Gemma Batty and Jen Saxton, won the title by a single shot to prevent St Andrews making a clean sweep of the prizes.

The men's event was a more one-sided affair with Alex Purdom (St Andrews; London, Canada) leading from start to finish with rounds of 69, 66 and 77 for a total of 212 and a seven-stroke victory from Andrew Davidson (Stirling). Craig Howie (Stirling) from Peebles, who tied for third place on 221 with Tom Beasley (St Andrews) had a stunning round of seven-under-par 64 on the Kittocks, including a run of seven straight birdies from the third hole.

St Andrews, represented by Purdom, Beasley, George Burns from Williamwood and Gonzalo Leon from Ecuador) comprehensively defeated the usually dominant Stirling team.

The Student Tour takes a break for the winter and returns at Dundonald in March 2015.
