It was not the start that Tegwen Mathews, the Great Britain & Ireland Curtis Cup team captain had hoped for at the St Louis Country Club in Missouri USA, as the GB&I team trail the USA 5-1 after the first day.

Stephanie Meadow, one of the heroes of Great Britain and Ireland's 2012 Curtis Cup victory, teamed up with Georgia Hall in the first four-ball match against Team USA's Emma Talley and Mariah Stackhouse. Talley and Stackhouse came out on top with a 2&1 victory that they led from the fourth hole on.

The Americans swept the three morning four-ball matches for the early lead. The Great Britain and Ireland team then earned a half in the first and third afternoon foursomes, as Team USA jumped out to a 5-1 lead after the first day of action.

The remaining four-ball matches in the morning saw USA's Alison Lee and Kyung Kim defeat Annabel Dimmock and Gemma Dryburgh 4&3 while American's Annie Park and Ally McDonald downed Bronte Law and Charlotte Thomas 4&3 as well.

Meadow (pictured) got GB&I on the scoreboard in the afternoon foursomes as she paired with Hall once again to halve their match with Ashlan Ramsey and Lee. Talley teamed with Mississippi State's McDonald in the afternoon foursomes and halved their match with Dimmock and Law. Park and Erynne Lee also defeated Eilidh Briggs and Gabriella Cowley 3&1.
