Wike Ridge Golf Club are celebrating after a run of fantastic results has seen the club achieve unprecedented success this year.
For the first time in thirteen years, the Leeds-based club won Yorkshire County Ladies Golf Association’s A Team Inter Club finals at Shipley Golf Club, their first ever success at county level. After overcoming Beauchief in extra-holes in the morning’s semi-final, the team would go on to beat leading qualifiers Ganton with a dominant performance in the final, winning four out of a possible five matches.
The club’s success continued at the home of golf, with Enid Gott and Karen Hughes claiming the Ladies Golf Union's Coronation Foursomes Grand Final at the Eden Course, in St Andrews. The Wike Ridge pair scored a splendid Stableford total of 44 points, eight-under handicap, to win by five points.
Hughes followed up her fine form at the PING Fourball Betterball Grand Final at Gainsborough Golf Club, this time alongside partner Deborah Spry, with the duo shooting 43 points to beat an initial entry of over 16,500 players to finish in third place.
The fantastic year for the club was topped off by a second place finish in the WPGA trophy, a new event which sees female club pros and amateurs team up in one of two regional finals with the hope of qualifying for the grand final in Portugal. The final took place at Pestana Vila Sol Golf & Resort Hotel from September 22-23, with a first prize of £2,500 up for grabs. The team of professional Eleanor Robinson and Gill Swaby-Ward, from Wike Ridge, headed the leaderboard after day one but would eventually lose out to Nikki Dunn, who is attached to Dinsdale Spa Golf Club, County Durham, and her amateur partner, 18-handicapper Sue Kiddle.
