January saw the annual AGM and traditional drive-in of the new captains at Hindhead Golf Club. The outgoing captains putted out on the 18th tee, followed by the incoming captains driving off from the 1st tee.

Harvie Harrington became Club Captain, along with Erica Pickard as Ladies Captain. For the first time in thirty years, the Junior section will have a young woman as their captain, Liberty Jones. This was followed by a busy field of competitors in a shotgun team Stableford competition.

Other significant changes at the Club saw Roger Wise presenting Ruth Hartley as Club President. Ruth was the first woman to hold this office in the Club’s history, and in recognition of her long service, she was elected an Honorary Life Member. Another first for the Club was the election of a woman as Club Vice-Captain, Gerry Marvell.

The outgoing captains, Lorne Magory and Lesley Sullivan, were delighted to announce that throughout 2018 the activities of Club members together with support from the Farnham Lions had raised £18,000 for Stepping Stones school in Hindhead. Stepping Stones provides education for those who cannot manage the hectic pace and environment of mainstream education, but would not be suitable for the more generalised special needs provision on offer at specialist schools.

Throughout 2019 the Club will be supporting Shooting Star Chase’s Hospice in Guildford, in particular contributing to the building of a sensory walkway in the garden. The hospice cares for children and young people with life-limiting conditions and supports their families from diagnosis to end of life and throughout bereavement.

The plan for the sensory walkway is to be colourful, bright and vibrant, with a range of sensory experiences as a child makes its way around the wheelchair accessible path. Sensory toys and equipment help to relax and sooth and they provide a stimulating environment, supporting non-verbal communication.

“Harvie and I decided to support Shooting Star Chase after we visited their Guildford hospice and were awestruck by the warmth and total dedication of their staff and the high level of care that they provide,” commented new Ladies Captain Erica. 

“We discovered that of the £10 million a year required to run their two hospices only 10% of that comes from government funding and we were determined to help in whatever way we could.” 

“I also have a personal connection with Shooting Star Chase as they were a great support to good friends of mine who had two lovely children with life-limiting conditions. They helped the family cope, and to deal with the pain of their loss.”
