Whilst the valiant teams from the USA and Europe fought it out for the Solheim Cup in Iowa last month, two Hertfordshire teams celebrated by staging their own version of the event.

Based on a formula first played in 2013, the ladies of Mill Green Golf Club took their turn to host the bi-annual tournament, challenging the ladies of their sister Crown Golf club, Chesfield Downs.

Both clubs embraced the spirit of the event, with flag waving caddies cheering on their teams, the clubhouse decked out in bunting, and the Chesfield Downs ladies sporting beautiful stars and stripes waistcoats, individually made by club member Hilary.

It was at a workshop organised by Women and Golf Magazine in 2012 that Katrina Douglas presented the captains with a memento of golf balls signed by the first winning European Solheim Cup Team. Perhaps it was a bad omen for USA representatives Chesfield Downs, who are yet to secure an overall win in the tournament. They will have to make do with a photo of it until 2019 when the re-match will be on home turf.

Well done to Mill Green for winning as Europe for three successive years.
