The first winner of the Jim Furyk Award for Sportsmanship also recieved a letter of congratulations from the star player.
Juniors at 3 Hammers Golf Complex in Wolverhampton now have an extra reason to work as a team and look out for each other.
The Jim Furyk Award for Sportsmanship has been created in honour of the ex-USA Ryder Cup Captain, and it will be awarded to a young golfer at the popular centre every year.
The first recipient of the award, 14-year-old Jensen Berridge also got an extra surprise in the form of a letter personally written by Jim Furyk.
The heartfelt note of congratulations included the lines:
“On the course we all strive to play our best. However, the recognition you received for your character, sportsmanship, and helping others is truly something to be proud of.”
The award came about after Staffordshire golfer Malcolm Read wrote to Furyk to commend him on how he handled team USA’s defeat at the 2018 Ryder Cup. After some correspondance back and forth, this eventually resulted in Furyk setting up the award in his name.
Rob Bluck, 3 Hammers Golf Academy Director, said Jensen was chosen because of his commitment to helping others at the venue.
He said:
“Jensen was the stand out winner of the Jim Furyk Award for Sportsmanship because of the time he has dedicated to volunteering and mentoring at 3 Hammers. By giving up his free time he has made a significant impact on many of the younger golfers at the Academy.”
Meanwhile, Jensen said:
“I love coming to 3 Hammers at the weekend to work on my game and spending time helping the younger golfers. We all enjoy practicing and playing here, I want to make sure that all the youngsters feel welcome and learn to love golf as much as I do.”
We think this is a lovely gesture by Furyk; it’s a super example of a successful golfer using their name for good.
