As Solheim Cup teams Europe and the USA were scheduled to tee off in Germany, Chesfield Downs (USA) and Mill Green (Europe) were teeing off in their own mini version of the Solheim Cup at Chesfield Downs Golf Club.

Chesfield Downs and Mill Green held their first mini Solheim Cup at Mill Green in 2013 as their way of promoting this prestigious golf tournament and women’s golf in general. It was such a success it was agreed that the two clubs would meet again in 2015.

On Friday 18th September both teams got right into the festival spirit of the Solheim Cup and dressed for the occasion! Tim Hudson, the General Manager at Chesfield Downs was very pleased to support the ladies and arranged for designated parking for all the team players and pyramids of practice balls for all, together with a banner and flags on the course. The halfway house was decked in bunting and draped in flags and offered savouries, cakes and Pimms to all who passed its door. Many of the ladies who did not play in the team turned out as caddies and spectators. They made the day really special by waving flags, chanting and administering high-fives for great shots and holes won!

Recently, when holding a workshop at Mill Green Katrina Douglas got to hear of the Solheim event between the two Crown clubs and videoed a personal message for the two teams. This was played just before the ladies headed out to the tee along with some inspirational clips from the 2013 Solheim Cup. In addition, Katrina very kindly donated to the two clubs one of the mementos that she had received as a player in the 1992 Solheim Cup. This was presented to Team Europe (Mill Green) who emerged as the winning team after some closely fought singles, foursomes and betterball matches.

In 2017 the ‘mini’ Solheim Cup will be back at Mill Green, when Chesfield Downs hopes to wrest the coveted prize from Mill Green.
