A total of 120 women from all over the country will arrive at St Enodoc Golf Club in Cornwall next week from Tuesday to Thursday 18-20 June, for a national championship.
A total of 120 women from all over the country will arrive at St Enodoc Golf Club in Cornwall next week for a national championship. Almost 90 of them will aim to become the 2019 English Senior Women’s Open Stroke Play champion, while the others will play a new companion handicap event.
The championship will be played from Tuesday to Thursday, 18-20 June, with the handicap competition taking place over the first two days.
The defending champion is Leicestershire’s Helen Lowe, while Cheshire’s Caroline Berry will be aiming for a seasonal double, having already won the English Senior Women’s Amateur.
The field includes a host of past winners and senior internationals, who will be bidding for valuable order of merit points which help to determine the England senior team.
Local interest in the championship will be strong, with three St Enodoc players in the field: Caroline Hume-Kendall, Meg Godfrey and Penny Cartwright.
Competitors will play the 54-hole event on the stunning Church course which features high dunes and wonderful views across the Camel estuary and out to sea.
The course takes its name from the 11th century St. Enodoc Church, by the 10thhole, where Sir John Betjeman is buried.
The club last hosted an England Golf event in 2014 when Bronte Law – now a winner of the LPGA Tour – became the English Women’s Amateur Champion.
The new handicap competition has attracted a strong field of 33 players, who will play 36 holes, with one round on each of the first two days of the championship.
