Speedgolf, the sport which addresses pace of play head on, will be back at a new venue, when the the British Open Speedgolf Championships returns on Sunday September 17.
The tournament will take place at Piltdown Golf Club, East Sussex just 20 miles from London Gatwick.
Speedgolf attracts both golfers and runners or those who seek a fresh fitness challenge. Whilst it is more physically demanding than the traditional golf game, providing a good work out, it is also a lot of fun.
Pam Painter Co-Founder of British Speedgolf says,
‘The common misconception is that Speedgolf is simply rushing around a golf course, it is the opposite. Whilst it is faster, the skill in Speedgolf is balancing your running pace with your capacity to accurately play your shots to get the lowest combined score possible.”
Favourite for this year's championship, which is in its fourth year, is Emma Morgan, who has won the title for the past two years, and came third in the 2015 World Speedgolf Championship in Chicago.
The sport is believed to have begun in the US in the 1970's when a handful of golfers began setting and chasing a world record. There are now over 15 Speedgolf leagues operated within the US and the sport is now attracting global interest with other nations hosting national championships and/or leagues including Australia, Japan, Iceland, Sweden and New Zealand. Other European countries are set to embrace Speedgolf in 2017.
