Women & Golf columnist Philippa Kennedy has become the first woman to captain The Stage Golfing Society in its 115-year history.

Journalist and broadcaster Philippa was confirmed as Captain at the society’s AGM in February at Richmond Golf Club where the SGS has a permanent home.

Actor Dougray Scott (Enigma, Mission Impossible 2) is this year’s President and musical theatre star Dean Chisnall (Blood Brothers, Shrek) the new Vice-Captain.

Philippa has had a long and varied career in Fleet Street and was the first woman news editor of the Daily Express and later its Wednesday columnist. She was a panelist on the first two series of ITV’s lunchtime show Loose Women and presented a show called Media Brief for BBC News 24. She is currently the Ombudsman for The Sun.

In 2003 she was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the Queen's Birthday Honours, for services to journalism.

She said: “I’m thrilled and proud to be the first woman captain of such a wonderful society, full of clever, funny people who give golf an extra dimension with their wit and talent.”

One of her duties as captain is to produce the annual Stage show in October for members of Richmond Golf Club. “Every captain has to do this and it’s always a worry, but there are plenty of people to help and it always goes down well”.

Fifteen years ago Philippa was captain of the Press Golfing Society, which is one year younger than The Stage GS. Says Philippa: “Golf has given me so much and it’s a great privilege to have captained two of the oldest golf societies in England - there are older ones in Scotland.

“We now play an annual match against each other and its great to see how well these two groups of people get on. Actors always need an audience and media people are great listeners.”
