Alison and Nicola Taylor from Walton Heath won the Mothers & Daughters tournament held at London’s Royal Mid-Surrey Golf Club last weekend, having scored 118 points over 27 holes of the Pam Barton course.
The 87th staging of the historic Open Foursomes competition saw 44 pairings take part, including defending champions Christine and Charlotte Griffith, also from Walton Heath Golf Club.
The competitive field also included six members of the Bonallack golfing family, led by Angela Bonallack, former Curtis Cup star and among the first women to become a member the R&A. She was joined in competition by three daughters and two grandchildren. The wife of former R&A Secretary Sir Michael Bonallack teed up with her daughter Jane Baker, representing St Rule & Burnham on Crouch GC against Sara and Natasha Stocks from Royal West Norfolk. The other family pairing saw Glenna and Claudia Beasley compete for Woburn. The pair played with former Curtis Cup Captain, Liz Boatman and her daughter Alex.
The prestigious tournament has been running every year since 1932 and staged at Royal Mid-Surrey in Richmond for the past 57 years. This year, it featured representatives from leading clubs such as Sunningdale, Royal Wimbledon, The Berkshire, Worplesdon, Ashdown Forest, Denham, West Hill, Hankley Common, West Sussex, Burnham & Berrow and Royal Porthcawl.
Open to Mother and Daughter pairings from across the country, the event is played on the 5,446-yard, par-71 Pam Barton Course, named the after the legendary British and US Amateur champion and club member who claimed the same title with her mother back in 1936.
There is no handicap limit to compete in the tournament, but places are handed to the 64 lowest combined handicaps on the final day of entry. The event features handicap as well as scratch prizes.
“This year’s event attracted a strong entry of 88 players and the event continues to be a highlight in the Ladies golfing calendar in terms of its reputation and the quality of the golf played,” said event organiser Sheila Stirling.
“It has served to promote the best virtues of women’s golf down the years and this year’s event shows that it still has a very bright future.”
Royal Mid-Surrey boasts one of the largest ladies’ section in England, with more than 360 lady members, and is also one of the few clubs with a resident lady professional.
