The directors and team at Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa were delighted to host the prestigious Grand Final of the 2016 Faldo Series international golf event in October for Sir Nick Faldo, in its 20th anniversary year.
After the 3 day event, during which Sir Nick stayed in one of the hotel’s luxurious Country Lodges, he commented, "Stoke by Nayland served as a most special site for our 20th Anniversary Faldo Series Grand Final. The hospitality shown to our players and our guests was second to none and the family and staff at Stoke by Nayland were very welcoming. The venue has delivered brilliantly. We made real history on that course and shared true camaraderie inspired by that setting. We are most grateful that Stoke by Nayland shared our commitment to growing opportunity through golf and developing tomorrow's champions."
Jiri Zuska was the overall winner and the first ever Czech champion of the Series, closing out with a final round of 70. An amazing new course record of 64 was achieved by 17 year old Frankie Capan from Minnesota, whose round included 9 birdies and led to Capan finishing joint 2nd overall.
Recognised as Britain’s most successful golfer, having won 6 majors, Sir Nick shared his knowledge from over 35 years of competing at the highest level by giving clinics to the young players during the week. He also delighted a gathering of Stoke by Nayland Golf Club members when he staged a very entertaining hour long masterclass for them at the Driving Range. The members had been invited as a thank you from the Club for volunteering as marshals at recent international events held at the award-winning venue.
Tom Williams, the Sports Presenter at BBC Look East TV, included the masterclass and other action from the event in his news report, and Sir Nick was also interviewed via a live feed with the studio during the evening news broadcast, giving the event nearly 5 minutes of air time. The event will also be broadcasted in the USA through various sports channels.
Sir Nick said, “I want to extend our thanks to all our supporters who make this possible for these young golfers. It was great for the players to have the PGA on board this week. The standard of play has been as good as I’ve seen in the many years I’ve been involved with youth golf.”
A Gala Dinner with prize giving and an enlightening Q & A session with Sir Nick and his son Matthew, was held to celebrate the event’s 20th anniversary in the hotel’s stunning Devora Suite. Guests at the dinner included directors from the PGA, European Tour and Ladies European Tour Access Series.
