As Masters Sunday gets started across the Atlantic, the Irish U18 Girls’ Stroke Play Championship came to a close at Roganstown Golf and Country Club.
There was no shortage of talent on display all weekend as 104 players from 15 countries battled the North Dublin Parkland.
The top 50 players after the opening 36 holes progressed to the final round where Ingrid Lindblad (Sweden) and Lea-Anne Bramwell (Wales) took a 2 shot lead. Lindblad opened with 8 straight pars and after 12 holes she was 3 shots clear of Bramwell and Kaylee de Jonge; who fired a final round 70 to move to +4. A birdie 3 on the 16th and two pars to finish was enough for a 4 shot win for the Swede.
“I am so happy, it is very unexpected but I am delighted!” beamed Lindblad – who had been soaked with water by her teammates on the 18th green!
“I have won some tournaments in Sweden but this is my first win in an international event. I played very solidly all week and hit a lot of greens which meant a lot of two putts were needed!” The sixteen year old competed at Roganstown in 2016 and will still be eligible to play again next year;
“This is a really good event and the course is so nice – the greens were especially nice this year. We travel as a team each year so it is enjoyable to be here!”
The Irish fight was led by Annabel Wilson (Lurgan) who after a second round 79, was -3 after 10 holes and found herself back in contention again. Unfortunately 3 bogeys on the closing 9 meant she signed for a level par 71 and a 6 over total for the Championship. Valerie Clancy (Killarney) and Beth Coulter (Kirkistown Castle) both started the day 4 and 5 shots back and finished with 77 and 78 respectively to finish in tied for 12th.
In the International Team Event, Ireland A (Wilson, Martin and Clancy) were tied with Sweden A (Rydqvist, Lindblad and Svensson) heading into the final round but it was the Swedes who prevailed to take the 2017 team event.
