International golfers Paula Grant (Lisburn) and Jessica Ross (Clandeboye) will be Ireland’s representatives at the South American Amateur Championship in Buenos Aires from 19-22 January.
Grant, who secured her first international cap at Girls level in 2009 went on to be crowned Irish Ladies’ Close Champion in 2013 at Ballybunion Golf Club. She recently moved back to Ireland after working as a pre-registration optometrist with Specsavers in Scotland and has committed to full time golf in 2017. With hard work and high hopes, Grant will be looking for a strong start to the year.
Ross finished in eight position on the LGU Order of Merit last year. 2016 was a positive year for the Clandeboye golfer as she secured a top ten finish at the British Ladies Stroke Play at Knock Golf Club and second place at the Welsh Women’s Open Stroke Play Championship at Conwy, Wales. Both girls represented Ireland at the 2016 Home International matches.
The South American Amateur Championships are open to men and women and were won last year by Juan Alvarez of Uruguay and Sofia Garcia from Paraguay – who lifted the trophy for the second year running. Garcia overcame Curtis Cup star, Maria Dunne by one shot in the 2015 tournament.
As they continue their support of golf worldwide, the R&A is once again backing the event which this year sees a host of elite international amateurs do battle for the highly coveted title. Participation in the 72 hole stroke play event for up to 30 overseas players is greatly facilitated by the R&A’s generous subsidy that assists with flights and entry fees.
The South American Amateur Championship is organised by the Argentine Golf Association and is supported by the R&A and Martindale Country Club. The Championship provides points for the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR).
