England’s Gemma Clews has hit a rich vein of form, scoring her second win in a top scratch event in a fortnight – with a combined score of 20-under par.
“I’m not really doing anything different, but for the last few months I’ve been working with my coach on scoring, getting it round in a good number,” said Clews, an England international from Delamere Forest in Cheshire.
Her latest success came in the Hampshire Rose at North Hants where she was eight under par, equalling the course record in the first round with a score of 67 and following up with 71 in the afternoon.
Just two weeks earlier she took the honours in the Delamere Comboy Scratch, at her home course, with a 36-hole total of 12-under.
The 22-year-old took advantage of her length off the tee at North Hants, where the previous winners include Charley Hull.
“I made the course play quite short and I had a lot of approach shots where I could hit a short iron or a pitch. In the morning I rolled a few putts in; I didn’t hole so many in the afternoon but I still got it round.”
In both rounds the 14th threatened to prove costly – she bogeyed the hole in the morning and had a triple there in the afternoon. But each time she had the perfect answer: in the first round she followed up with four birdies; in the second she finished birdie, birdie, par, birdie.
Clews ended the day four shots clear of fellow England international Sophie Lamb (Clitheroe). Caley McGinty (Knowle) was third on three-under.
The next date for Clews is the Helen Holm Scottish open stroke play at Troon, which starts on 21 April.
