Four-In-A-Row For Gemma Clews At Delamere

England international Gemma Clews has tightened her grip on the Delamere Comboy Scratch Trophy with her fourth consecutive victory – winning every year since it started.

Her latest win, on her home course at Delamere Forest, Cheshire, was achieved with remarkable golf. She was 12-under for 36 holes, with two rounds of 67 and she won by two shots from girl international Lily May Humphreys.

What’s more, she beat the best-ever field to play in the competition, which is the first of the season's prestigious women's 36-hole scratch tournaments. It has been paired with the Formby Leveret to create a 72-hole event which attracts world ranking points – and top players.

“This is my best win,” said Clews, 22, who signed off with an eagle three on the 36th hole. “It’s definitely special to win this one because of the support the club gives me. It means a lot.”

She set off in great style with a bogey-free morning round, which included four birdies and an eagle on the par five 11th, where her three-wood shot finished 5ft from the hole.

It gave her a two-shot lead over Humphreys at the halfway stage, but Clews was unaware of the state of play until she’d passed the 14th hole on her second round.

Her afternoon round contained her only dropped shots of the day, with a double bogey five on the short fourth, but they were soon forgotten as she amassed six birdies and that closing eagle.

“I knew I probably needed to make a birdie and I just tried for the eagle,” said Clews, who rolled in a 25-footer. “I thought if Lily had shot better, then fair play to her.”

Humphreys, (Stoke by Nayland) matched Clews in the afternoon with a six-birdie 67, which she added to her opening 69. The 15-year-old is the English U16 girls’ champion.

Emily Toy (Carlyon Bay), a past English girls’ champion, was third with rounds of 73 71.
