Girls Golf Rocks is back in Essex – and this year it’s going on Tour.
Essex pioneered Girls Golf Rocks, now a national campaign to attract more girl golfers, run by England Golf and the Golf Foundation. It encourage newcomers to have fun, learn a new sport and play alongside friends.
This year, the county will again break new ground by organising a series of five golf days between April and October to encourage beginners and improvers to play more often.
Wendy Cook, the County Junior Organiser said:
“We’ve done really well with Girls Golf Rocks, but now we’ve got to keep the interest of our new golfers and encourage them to get out with friends and play more often.”
The Tour days will run alongside the successful formula of attracting new players by offering free taster sessions for girls, follow-up coaching courses with PGA professionals – and the all-important support of Ambassadors from the county squads.
They include 14-year-old Hannah Kane, who has come full circle. She went along to a Girls Golf Rocks session in 2015, got hooked on the sport, has joined Little Channels Golf Club, has a handicap and is all set to inspire other youngsters.
She said: “I would recommend Girls Golf Rocks to anyone as a way of getting into golf, it’s been an amazing experience so far.”
Hannah added: “Since starting to play regularly I have met some amazing people, played on some lovely courses and have made some great friends. I now play and practice whenever I can, have cut my handicap in half over the last two seasons and last season was lucky enough to be selected to play for Essex Girls in the East Region Trophy.
“I have just started helping our club professionals with coaching the youngest of our junior section for my Duke of Edinburgh Award which I am really enjoying.”
This year’s taster sessions will take place at:
Millers Barn Golf Club on Tuesday 18 April
Frinton Golf Club on Tuesday, 18 April
Colne Valley Golf Club on Tuesday, 18 April
Little Channels Golf Club on Tuesday, 18 April
Garon Park Golf Club on Wednesday, 19 April
Rivenhall Oaks Golf Club on Sunday, 23 April
Rayleigh Club on Sunday, 23 April

Following the tasters, the seven clubs will each offer a five-week coaching course with PGA professionals, when the Ambassadors will be on hand again to encourage the newcomers. All the girls completing the coaching courses will be given a US Kids Golf 7-iron to help them start playing.
Girls Golf Rocks aims to increase the number of girl golfers from an average of just two full members per club. Last year in Essex it was hugely successful with almost 70 girls attending the tasters and taking coaching courses.
