Golfers share common faults, but with the help of our new Women & Golf instructor, PGA Professional Sarah Smith, she’ll help to fix them and sink putts more consistently.

DISTANCE CONTROL

FAULT
When putting, it’s the length of your swing that predominantly affects distance control. When the putter speeds up or slows down in tempo during the swing, or the length of the swing differs from either side, it will affect how far the ball travels.

FIX

putterbackputtthrough

The putting stroke is about working on equal distances back and through, increasing the length for a long putt and decreasing the length for a short putt. The tempo should not be varied.

WHY DO YOU MISS PUTTS LEFT AND RIGHT?

FAULT

An incorrect set-up, such as standing too close to the ball, can promote a wristy stroke, leading to an uncontrolled distance of the putter going backwards and forwards through the swing.

FIX

At set-up, think about getting your eyes over the ball, hinging the spine angle from your hips (not lower back), relaxing your arms from your shoulders over the putt and rocking the shoulders in a pendulum action.

FAULT

putterface

Any change in your left wrist position (right-handed golfers) during a putting stroke will have an immediate effect on the angle of the clubface returning to the ball.

FIX

My best tip is to think about the back of your left hand going towards the hole for every putt, so the left wrist remains square and therefore the clubface remains square at impact.
