Fairway bunkers are an almost guaranteed one-shot penalty, but let’s try and leave it at that! Women & Golf instructor Samantha Head explains the correct technique to ensure you get the ball out safely.
Choosing the correct club is essential. Check out the lip of the bunker and ensure that you select a club that is guaranteed to make the height.
Set up with the ball slightly further back in your stance than normal and hold down the grip by a centimetre. By having the ball a little further back means the club will connect with the ball first, then the sand, causing a slight thin, but this is one of the few times that a thin is good.
You will lose some distance, so take this into account, but the ball will fly out with ease.
