Hitting the ball low is a useful skill; it will come in handy on many occasions – in high wind, escaping under branches and also a running shot onto a green.

Hitting the ball low is a useful skill to have in your golfing armoury; it will come in handy – in high wind, escaping under branches, and also a running shot onto a green that isn’t guarded by hazards.

THINK CAREFULLY

Stand behind the ball and assess the situation, select a club that has little loft like a 5-iron and grip down the club for more control. Alignment is crucial, pick a mini target in front of your ball.  For this shot you need to play it further back in your stance, but it then becomes easy  for the clubface to open (aiming right of the target for right-handers).  Use the mini target to help you square up the clubface so you are aiming in the right direction.

SET-UP

Once the ball is placed back in your stance, lean your weight onto the foot nearest the target. You will see the loft disappearing off the face of your club, thus creating the perfect set-up to accommodate a low flying shot.

Your backswing and follow through should be shorter and normal.  Remember that if you finish low, your shots will fly low, if you finish high, they will fly high.
