Making sure you've got the perfect golf grip is critical to your game. Get it right, and the rest will follow.

If you're new to golf, making sure you've got a perfect grip is one of the first things you should focus on.

The way you hold the club – your grip – will determine what the clubface does at impact and ultimately how you hit the ball.

Ryan Fenwick explains how to check your grip to make sure you get it right every time.

Why golf grip is so important

The way you grip the golf club is so important.

That's because the way your hands hold the golf club directly impacts the clubface at impact. Your grip will determine whether the clubface is open, closed or pointing straight towards the target.

And that in turn will determine where you hit the ball.

Having a good golf grip also means you can move your wrists smoothly and fluidly throughout your swing, without having to make any compensations with your hands or arms.

Ultimately, if you get your grip wrong, you'll find it really difficult to hit the ball straight.

Here's why you need to make sure you have a good grip:

  • Give yourself the best chance of making sure the clubface is square at impact
  • Make sure you can move your wrists and arms smoothly and fluidly
  • Limit the need to make compensations throughout your swing
  • Hit the ball straighter and more consistently
