All golfers would love to drive the ball consistently long and straight, so follow this instruction, because if you have the correct technique and maintain a good rhythm, you’ll be walking down the middle of the fairway every time.
Takeaway
Focus on taking the club away low and slow at a consistent speed. Keep your hands close to your body as this will help you to achieve a parallel backswing. If you lift up your hands too quickly it will cause all kinds of problems including inconsistency with the strike, direction issues and the club will incorrectly point right at the top of your backswing.
Backswing
The backswing should be the slowest part of your drive sequence with speed being generated on the downswing. You need to make a full shoulder turn, but avoid lifting your left shoulder (right-handed golfers). Feel as though your left shoulder is dropping to the ground as it is difficult to make an adequate turn once it has already been lifted. It is important to focus on keeping your head still on the backswing. Swaying backwards can cause all kinds of problems as you will struggle to keep your balance and are likely to thin the ball or catch it heavy.
Weight Transfer
Weight transference in the golf swing is a smooth transition of the body from the right side to the left (right-handed golfers). As you swing the club back, you will naturally transfer your weight onto your right side, but it’s important not to overdo it. Therefore, always try to keep your swing stable throughout to allow for a more natural transition back through to your foot nearest the target. Good weight transfer is easier to achieve if you straighten your right leg, especially for those golfers who are less flexible, and try to transfer your weight onto your left side as soon as you begin your downswing.
