It’s lovely to stand on the 1st tee and hit a corker down the middle. However, this isn’t always the case with a more nervous, tight swing with little confidence.

Does this sound familiar? This instruction considers ball position and alignment, which can make a huge difference to the ball direction and is simple to fix.

Ball Position

The ball position can be a result of a poor swing path so before changing it is worth noting the shape of your shot first.

TOO FAR FORWARD

If you slice the ball this can be due to an out-to-in swing path, therefore the ball is too far forward in your stance.

TOO FAR BACK

A hook is due to an in-to-out swing path when the ball is too far back in your stance. It’s advisable to ask someone to check your swing as sometimes what we feel is different to what we are actually doing and there might be other causes for a hook or slice.

Alignment

Alignment can change considerably with ball position, so once you have the correct position, you can then check your alignment.

This can be done in a number of ways. Place a club or alignment stick on the ground in line with the target and match your feet, knees, and
shoulders with the stick. To help even further, place a club in line with your shoulders and you will see the visual of the club and the alignment stick together.
