How you grip the golf club is one of the most important elements of instruction as it is the only connection you have with the club and will predominantly influence the direction of the shot.

The grip, which can be an overlap, interlock or ten-fingered grip, is something that is learned and does not come naturally to any golfer; therefore you must learn correctly from the beginning. As you may well know, once you start playing the game, the grip is one of the most difficult things to change!

The left hand should be placed so the handle sits between the bottom pad of the little finger and the middle pad of the index finger. This way the hand can curl around the handle.

Learn From The Best

  • In Ben Hogan’s view, to check the position for the perfect grip, hold the handle with one finger and the thumb pad (pictured top).
  • Hogan also suggests holding the handle with two fingers on the right hand. This is a useful drill to demonstrate the feeling of holding the club with your fingers rather than the palm of your hand.

Grip and Go

  • Once you have the feeling of holding the club in your fingers, it’s time to put both hands on the club together.
  • A good routine is to place the left hand on the grip first. Two or three knuckles should be visible with a ‘V’ between the thumb and index finger that points between your chin and left shoulder.
  • Place the right hand on the club to form a second ‘V’ that matches your left hand.

Tip- Practise by picking up a bag, as this will show you the difference between picking it up in the palm or your hand and your fingers.
