Women & Golf Member Louise Campbell reviews the Abacus Gleneagles Thermo Midlayer
Review by Louise Campbell - Murrayfield Golf Club
My name is Louise Campbell, and I play golf in Scotland. I was sent the Abacus Ladies Gleneagles Thermo Midlayer top in peacock blue, size medium, to test. It comes in two colours (blue and stone) sizes XS-XXL and is priced at $125 (£100).
Initial Thoughts
The top looks and feels very soft, sleek, and smooth. Having been to the Gleneagles course the colour of the top matches the autumn / spring landscape you would see there. The qualities of the “drycool” fabric are wicking (so drawing moisture off by capillary action), breathability and stretchable.
First impressions are “I want to wear this!” I feel I can swing a club with ease and the full length zipper has a protected top at the neck for comfort and no skin irritation. It has 2 roomy deep horizontal pockets for tees (which won’t fall out) and keeping my hands warm between shots. A special feature is the light padding at the upper chest / shoulder. This will be ideal support for me when I play with a half set of clubs in a carry bag, with the extra padding under the shoulder strap. It will also provide extra warmth. The sleeves and pockets have the same neat navy cuff.
The Test
I wore the top on a Spring day as a mid-layer. Initially I needed a wind/waterproof jacket on top and I had a light tee shirt underneath. The conditions were cool, but sunny and a light wind with possible rain forecast.
The Verdict
The top lived up to expectation. It provided a second layer that was easy to put on and take off. It gave warmth without sacrificing freedom of movement and did not feel “bulky”. Once I warmed up, I was able to discard my outer jacket and swing more easily in the mid-layer. It was admired by my playing partners for looks and feel.
Would I recommend it? Yes!
