Women & Golf Member Lesley reviews the Abacus Hoylake thermo mid-layer

Review by Lesley Knight - who plays at Colne Valley Golf Club in Essex

As a keen golfer I was pleased to be sent an Abacus Hoylake thermo midlayer in peach to review. It is available in two colours - peach or violet. Sizes: XS to XXL. RRP: £89.

It is a stretchable fleece, smooth and silky feeling on the outside and brushed on the inside with a full length front zip and two zipped pockets.

Initial Thoughts

As I opened the parcel was that it felt lovely and soft to the touch, but it looked really large for its size and that turned out to be the case, I think at least a size larger than the label said.

The Test

I’ve used the jacket five times over the last month playing at four different courses including Thorpeness with the usual coastal breezes, Manor of Groves, The Burstead, and my home club Colne Valley and have found it really warm and comfortable to wear.

One of the days was really cold, about six degrees, and I wore the jacket over a thin cotton top and stayed perfectly warm. One of rounds was a little drizzly and the jacket coped with that too!

The top of the zipper is well padded and doesn’t rub on the neck, and the sleeves are plenty long enough, I’m 5ft 8in so sometimes find sleeves a bit short.

The jacket is really lightweight with a four way stretch and I had no trouble playing golf in it.  The zips felt solid and well-made and the pockets are fairly deep which is useful for keeping your hands warm and items don't drop out easily when you are rummaging for your bits and bobs.

The Verdict

It’s a really nice comfortable and cosy jacket to wear, very warm and stretchy so no restriction in the swing, plenty long enough too.

I would have preferred a more slim line fit as it’s quite loose across the front when putting, but that might have been better if I had tested a smaller size.

It washes beautifully with no need to iron and it dried really quickly too. At about £80 I think it’s well worth the money and I will certainly be wearing it a lot over the winter.

We like...

Warm and comfortable to wear
Washes beautifully with no need to iron
Stretchy, not at all restrictive

We dislike...

I am usually size 16 to 18 and the mid-layer that was sent is size 18, but it is large for its size so would size down.

Final Score

Would I recommend it? Yes! I would recommend.
