Women & Golf's Jane reviews the Golfstream Gx5 Electric Trolley - how does it measure up against her current trolley?

Golfstream recently gave us the chance to try out one their latest models - the Golfstream Gx5 electric golf trolley.

Founded in 2008, the Golfstream team have over 60 years experience in the electric golf trolley market. Offering a more personal, helpful, professional yet customer friendly service they design and manufacture trolleys (push and electric).

Originally, a spare parts business for the electric golf trolley market. They now offer a variety of trolleys, accessories, golf bags and batteries.

Here's my observations.

Other benefits

Easy to load battery with secure strap
Cradle keeps bag in place
Very clear screen & responsive button
Very comfortable handlebars
Battery with USB port

I was going rue the fact that the trolley didn't have a USB port to charge your phone/ scorecard app. Fear not - it's in the battery. You just need to bring your long cable.

On the fairway

One of the things I really liked about the trolley was its robust-ness (is that a word?)

Throughout my round regardless of whether the terrain was flat or sloping the trolley always felt super sturdy. This was particularly true on slopes, where I felt it would not career off or fall on its side.

I would say the main frame is a little heavy once the battery is in situ so be aware of this as it made steering a little difficult.

It's a nice compact trolley and despite a weighty bag of clubs, the trolley ran extremely smoothly (and quietly).

The speed of the trolley is quick and set it at 9 at your peril. 4 to 5 is more than sufficient for general walking pace and you have the added benefit of the downhill control. I used 7 to go up hills.

Although it comes to a halt very quickly, you do get used to it, and what I really like it that the wheels reverse if you have gone too far forward and need to pull the trolley backwards.

Programming mode

You can customise the display - Clock, Name, Right or Left-handed - and I'll talk about this the next time.

What's missing?

Well, one thing (and this is just me being picky):

  • A stronger magnet on the frame to keep the frame together when closed - you need to make sure the battery strap is around the frame when closed in order to pick the trolley up without it coming apart

How does it compare to my current trolley?

I've been using a Powerbug electric trolley for a few years now and it is nowhere near as stable or sturdy as the Gx5. The battery is slightly lighter on the Powerbug but not on their comparable newer version. The Powerbug battery comes as 36-hole standard. Price-wise they are the same.

We like...

  • Easily fold the trolley up & down in seconds
  • Easy to load/ charge battery
  • Long battery life
  • You can
  • Powerful but quiet motor
  • Competitively priced

We dislike...

  • A little on the heavy side once battery loaded
  • No USB port so you can charge your phone on the course
  • Need to be careful picking up when closed as magnet doesn't feel strong enough

Final Score

I liked the simplicity of the trolley in terms of load and go. The battery and motor are extremely powerful. The trolley was extremely sturdy and  liked the sturdy handlebars.

It's competitively priced in the marketplace and will definitely last a long time.
